Wisdom Tuesday #2

Monash University has a large amount of lectures around communication and performance studies. I’ve listened to a few and they are fantastic, but this one sticks out to me as an amazingly insightful and scientific look at DIY culture. its called “The Paradox of “Do-It-Yourself” in Unpopular Music ”

“This paper examines the construction of ‘Do-It-Yourself’ (DIY) values in music-making. The importance of agency and participation as existing outside of the mainstream field of music is argued to be part of a process of music production, consumption and distribution that cannot be simplified according to a ‘mainstream versus alternative’ model. This dichotomy is a persistent one, but investigation into a small music making community revealed that social actors situating themselves in opposition to dominant norms will engage in complex and contradictory ways within the music field. It is more useful to talk of a continuum of music production rather than clearly bounded

Check it out on the link below. its really fantastic.

Wisdom Tuesday.

Gonna start something new, Wisdom tuesday, where I post a bit of wisdom from something I read this week. Today is from an interview with Pat Maine on Audible Hype.

“AH: What are the most common mistakes you see opening (and headlining) acts making — both onstage and on the road?

Pat Maine: Alright! I like this one. KNOW YOUR ROLE IN THE SHOW. As an opener, you are opening it up for the next guy and more importantly the headliner. IT’S NOT YOUR SHOW. Nobody is there for you,, no matter how dope you truly are. STOP ROCKING A LONG SET. Try relating with this strange new audience by giving praise to the headliner as a fellow fan. HYPE FOR THE HEADLINER.”
